Summer Internships
Summer Internships with Amy Bould at Be Bold Media
What attracted you to internships?
Be Bold Media is growing, which means we need people. And those people need the right skills. What we’re finding is that there’s not enough people with the right skills – so we need to develop our own. We’ve always been committed to providing work experience placements and graduate opportunities, but the reality is that as a small company we often need people to come to us ‘ready-made’.
Why didn’t you do it before?
As a fast-moving strategic communications and media company, our team works fast and hard and finding time to bring on less experienced people can be a challenge. However, like many employers, we need to find the time and taking on an intern is a great intermediate step which helps both us and the person joining us. Our first intern joined us after applying for a job which she thought she might be able to do while finishing her degree in Journalism and Digital Media. Although we absolutely saw her potential, we needed someone full-time. What we did was to offer her an internship during her university summer break, giving her a chance to use the skills she was developing as part of her studies while giving us the benefit of her additional support. We chose to pay our intern – as a Real Living Wage-accredited business it would never have been anything other than a paid internship!
What difference will it make to your business?
What we’re hoping to do through internships is create a pipeline of talent who can learn about us and the way we do business so that they are better prepared for employment in their chosen career – and obviously we hope that’s with us!
